HKSF Sail Training Pathways
Though most sailing courses are taken at the various recognised training centres and clubs around Hong Kong, occasionally the HKSF runs its own courses. Click below to see what courses are currently on offer.
Sailing is a lifetime sport. While not everyone can afford to own a cruiser/yacht, dinghy sailing offers an economical option. In Hong Kong, there are 14 HKSF Recognized Teaching Centres which offer various levels of dinghy training.
HKSF Club Judge Seminar
The Hong Kong National Judges Programme provides a framework for individuals wishing to develop their protest committee skills. For more information please visit National Judges Programme page. ‘Club Judge’ is the first level of the programme. Registration for this two-evening ‘Club Judge Seminar’ is now open to individuals, with priority going to those who have […]
Welcome to the sport of sailing. We hope that through this programme, you will discover a lifetime’s enjoyment on the water
The programme is progressive. You cannot learn the more advanced skills unless the basic techniques are mastered and you cannot learn to race before you can learn to sail.
JUNIOR DINGHY SCHEME
The Junior Dinghy Scheme takes children from their first experience with sailing through to learning the skills needed for racing. The courses are designed to be fun and be warned – you will get wet!
The HKSF Feeder Scheme is a subsidised grass-roots learn-to sail programme for those aged between 8 to 12, it has been running annually and follows the 4 course levels in our Junior Dinghy Scheme.
REGIONAL SQUAD PROGRAMME
The HKSF Regional Squads are designed to give young people a chance to develop higher level skills and introduce competitive sailing with the ultimate possibility of joining national and international events.
DINGHY SAILING SCHEME
As with the Junior scheme, the Adult Dinghy Scheme is progressive, taking you from complete beginner to learning the techniques needed for small boat racing.
PVOC 2 COURSE
The HKSF Pleasure Vessel Operators Certificate Grade 2 entitles the holder to take charge of a pleasure vessel of not more than 15m in length overall operating in Hong Kong waters. It is an alternative to the Marine Department’s course of the same name.
SAFETY AT SEA
Apart from it being a very good idea to learn what to do in case of an emergency, man-overboard for example, a recognised Safety at Sea certification is also a requirement for participation in offshore races.
It is a World Sailing requirement for participation in offshore races that least one has a valid first aid certificate. There are various recognised course providers in Hong Kong.
Dinghies are for everyone, the young at heart, not just the young! Our Dinghy sailing scheme will take you from complete beginner to a competitive racer.
We also run a Pleasure Vessel Operators Level 2 Course, which is a Hong Kong Government recognised course, and a necessity for anyone operating a boat with an engine.
The HKSF runs the Dinghy Instructor Scheme to provide trained personnel for centres to conduct dinghy courses for members and the public.
For details of the scheme, please refer to the HKSF Syllabus and Logbook for Dinghy Instructors Scheme published in 2008.
If are interested in joining one of our courses, please contact us for more information.
DINGHY INSTRUCTOR COURSE
The HKSF organizes the Dinghy Instructor Course from time to time for people who are interested in teaching sailing. People who are interested in doing a Dinghy Instructor Course must attend and pass a one-day Pre-Entry Assessment conducted by an HKSF Dinghy Examiner not more than one year prior to the instructor training.
All Dinghy Instructor Certificates are valid for five years from the date of issue. In order to the certificate an instructor has to attend and pass a two-day revalidation course.
Besides the Dinghy Instructor Course, the HKSF also organises various training courses regularly for Dinghy Instructors who wish to acquire different knowledge in teaching sailing, such as Safety Boat Handling Course.
RACE MANAGEMENT PROGRAM
The HKSF is developing a National scheme for Club Race Management starting with the level one course which introduced you to all aspects of being a Race Officer in your Club or Watersports Center.
We also hold training and Seminars for experienced Club Race Officers who wish to become National Race Officers.
NATIONAL JUDGES PROGRAMME
The HKSF runs the National Judges Programme to ensure that there is a supply of properly qualified racing protest committee members as well as giving those members the opportunity to develop their skills, and even work towards becoming International Judges
NATIONAL UMPIRE PROGRAMME
The Hong Kong National Umpire Programme aims to help those interested in becoming race umpires get the training needed umpire in Hong Kong and to then develop their skills, allowing HKG NUs to be recognized overseas.
Trained Race Officers ensure that races are run with quality, integrity and consistency for all participants.
Volunteering and becoming a race official is a great way to give back to the sport of sailing and support sailboat racing in Hong Kong. There are 3 main areas you can become a race official: Race Officers, Umpires and Judges. Take a look at the different roles and courses then talk to your local club or contact the HKSF to find out what opportunities are available to you.
If you are interested in becoming an HKSF Dinghy Instructor or a
Race Official please get in touch. For all other courses please get in touch with your local sailing club or centre.
